What is Spravato?

Spravato® is a nasal spray containing an FDA-approved drug called esketamine. It’s a stronger form of ketamine, a medication that’s already known for its ability to rapidly relieve depression.

Because Spravato is stronger, it offers rapid effects in the brain with significantly lower doses. It can start easing depression in as little as a few hours.  

While Spravato’s properties aren’t fully understood, it’s believed that it works on the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptors in the brain. 

It increases glutamate in the brain, which “wakes up” brain cells and helps you retrain your brain, grow new brain connections, repair damaged connections, and ultimately lessen your depressive thoughts and feelings.

Who can take Spravato?

Spravato was created for two groups of people, including those with: 

• Treatment-resistant depression

The traditional approach to depression is usually psychotherapy treatment and medication. Many Wholesome Psychiatry LLC patients use pharmacogenomic testing to find the ideal medication for their depression and experience relief in that way. 

However, if you’ve tried a couple of different antidepressants and aren’t experiencing depression relief, you might be a good candidate to try Spravato.

• Suicidal thoughts or actions

If you have major depressive disorder and you’re struggling with suicidal thoughts, or have attempted suicide, Spravato could be a good treatment option for you. 

When you’re in either situation, rapid symptom relief is the most important thing, and that’s exactly what Spravato can provide. 

How does the Spravato treatment process work?

Spravato supplements your current antidepressant, so you continue taking that medication as directed by your Wholesome Psychiatry LLC provider’s guidance. The Spravato treatment takes place in the office. 

You administer the Spravato medication yourself, under the direction of your provider. Before your first use of Spravato, you blow your nose to clear your nostrils. 

You hold the device, tilt your head back, and position it inside each nostril in turn, depressing the plunger once for each nostril. Each Spravato device contains two sprays. You sniff lightly after each spray to keep the medication in your nostrils. 

After your Spravato dosage, you rest in a quiet room for at least two hours. This observation period is to monitor your blood pressure and make sure you don’t have any side effects. 

You can then return home, with someone else driving after treatment.
